Sculptural steelwork trees - Ivy Asia Restaurants
1:1 scale, cherry blossom trees fabricated in steel and dressed in polystyrene, polymer clay with applied texture and artificial blossoms
Large fabrication project entailing the construction of a series of 1:1 scale cherry blossom trees, to feature as statement pieces inside lavishly decorated restaurant chain.
27 seperate trees ranging in size from 6' to over 25', each one unique. I was principal fabricator, developing each tree from a simply 2D drawing into a full scale 3d object. Many of these trees are required to interact with architecture in the buildings and as such were built around low resolution mock-ups of architectural features. Each trees was produced with sleeved and bolted joints, allowing them to be disassembled in order to fit through conventional sized doors.
Some of the more complex trees required me to produce 3D models to explore options and assess potential problems before construction. These were modelled in rhino 3D, allowing intuitive repositioning of branches. Finalised models were used to create more sophisticated drawings.
I was on-site co-managing installation for the majority.
